Visual & Performing Arts
Visual and performing arts at YHIS are one facet of how we maintain our commitment to teaching the whole child. Studies show that students that are active in visual and performing areas perform higher on standardized tests, but that is not the reason all secondary students take these classes.
With the influx of visual messages and media that are coming through so many devices all day long, we believe that it is important not only for each child to be literate in knowing their home language, English and Chinese, but to be literate in the visual language as well. Visual images are designed with purpose and often designed to influence you. Without the tools to “read” and understand images, we are influenced in ways we are unaware. We expose the students to a wide range of knowledge and skills that provide a basic foundation to media literacy. We have created ceramics by hand, and by using molds. We use computers to generate designs for four-color printing process. We also teach basic drawing and painting skills so that students can express themselves.
Sports
The YHIS athletics program continues to grow stronger every year. In the fall, our middle school students have the opportunity to play soccer, while our high school students have the opportunity to play volleyball. Our middle school students can play basketball in the winter and spring. For our high school students, basketball is offered in the winter and soccer is offered in the spring. The YHIS athletics program is a member of both the Yantai Educational Association of Sports and Arts (YEASA) and the International Schools Consortium (iSC) Athletic Association. As a part of these associations, our teams have the opportunity to participate in games and tournaments throughout the school year and in cities across China. YHIS hosts the iSC Middle School Soccer Tournament in November every year. More information about games and tournaments will be announced in the YHIS Weekly Newsletters. iSC Activities
As part of the iSC network of schools, our High School students have a variety of opportunities to travel around China and beyond for various tournaments, performances and competitions. For example, YHIS provide opportunities for students to take part in sports tournaments in basketball, volleyball, and soccer. Regrading competitions, we provide opportunities for students to take part in Science Fairs, Model United Nations, etc. We believe that these opportunities are invaluable towards a full High School experience.
