Samuel Goh

Head Principal
Home Country: Singapore

Bio

As a Third-Culture Kid, l had the benefit of experiencing both a Singapore and New Zealand education experience. Those were vital in shaping my perspective of education around the world. In my seven years of education in New Zealand, I was awarded the House Distinction Award from Macleans College in Auckland.

l graduated from The University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Political Science. After which, I returned to Singapore to serve in the military service for two years. I then joined the Ministry of Education, and graduated from the National Institute of Education, Singapore with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education and thereafter a Masters in Management and International Business.

I first started the teaching career in Singapore as a trained English, History, and Social Studies teacher at a Secondary School. During this time, I was appointed as a subject head of national education. A few years later, I joined the Singapore Education Ministry Headquarters serving in the Curriculum Planning Division. Over the course of my career in Singapore, I have received numerous awards. Some of these awards include “Best Research Paper in the International Redesigning Pedagogy Conference” (2013), school-based awards as well as a national award.

In 2015, my family and I moved to Wuhan and served as High School Social Studies teacher at Wuhan Yangtze International School, before becoming the Secondary Principal in 2016.

Bio

I have always been interested in two things – how the natural world works and B-grade science fiction. My lifelong fascination with them began when, as a six-year-old, I visited the Singapore Science Center after watching a B-grade silent film adaptation of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The first “original” question I remember asking is – why do we hear explosions in films about outer space when space is a vacuum? After many detours later in life, including a post-graduate degree in science and research work as a rain forest conservationist, I became a teacher with the intention of helping young people de-mystify science and appreciate nature.

However, patterns are intricate to catch. Getting patterns is an enduring change in behavior which results from practice and other forms of experience in ‘your life’. Math is the same. Students need to find and learn the patterns in the real world with a mathematical perspective.

Film directing, Shandong University of Arts

Bio

I had a wonderful childhood in a beautiful town of Yantai. I loved arts since I was little. In my early twenties, I learned many aspects of film and drama while I was in college. Though I don’t teach arts, what I learned still helps a lot during teaching. After I graduated from college, I got a chance to work as an English Course consultant, which led my life to exposure to English. I had an opportunity to spend a couple of years in America and those experiences are precious to me. While I was in America, I taught American children Chinese, through which I gained teaching experience and learned about education. Through my teaching experience, I learned how valuable and important teachers are as they impact on the lives of students. I learned pedagogics and educational psychology by myself after I came back to China, through which I obtained a teaching certificate. I hope I can continue life-long learning and become better at teaching. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, reading, and having a short trip with my family.
