Preparing students for university

Building a culture of lifelong connection

A few weeks ago, a dedicated team of staff from our school and other LifePlus institutions—including head principals, secondary principals, and college and career counselors—embarked on a purposeful journey to Seoul, South Korea. Their mission? To strengthen relationships with top Korean universities and reconnect with alumni, ensuring that current and future students have access to the best opportunities for their academic and professional growth.

Firsthand University Visits: Empowering Informed Guidance

When it comes to preparing students for higher education, nothing compares to firsthand experience. By visiting universities in person, our counselors gain up-to-date insights into campus life, admissions trends, and academic expectations. Jeff Birdsong, our college and career counselor in Chengdu, emphasized the significance of these visits: “by visiting universities, we gain firsthand knowledge of campus life and resources, build stronger relationships with admissions officers, stay up to date with admission trends and requirements, and enhance our credibility and confidence in advising students.”

Key Insights for Student Success

One of the most valuable takeaways from these meetings was a deeper understanding of what universities are truly looking for. Linda Liu, our college and career counselor in Wuhan, shared that many Korean universities prioritize a well-balanced academic record alongside a student’s passion and potential in their chosen major—rather than focusing solely on the number of AP courses taken. This aligns with our school’s emphasis on holistic development, where students explore diverse extracurricular opportunities that nurture their talents beyond the classroom.

The Power of an Active Alumni Network

Attending our school means becoming part of a lifelong community. Alumni connections provide invaluable support and inspiration for students navigating their university choices. Megan Lee, our college and career counselor in Qingdao, highlighted how current students often turn to former upperclassmen for advice on applications and university life. “Alumni networks serve as bridges, connecting students with individuals who understand their journey and can offer guidance on achieving their academic and career goals.”

During the trip, school leaders met with former students who are now thriving at university. These reunions reinforced the strength of our community and the lasting impact of our educational approach. Jeff Birdsong reflected, “Seeing our alumni in person, witnessing their growth, and sharing laughs as we reminisced about their school days was truly rewarding.” Many alumni expressed that they felt more prepared for university than peers who had followed a traditional Korean education path. They found their research and writing skills—developed in an English-based learning environment—highly transferable to Korean universities, a surprising yet welcome advantage.

Beyond Graduation: Mentorship and Giving Back

Our commitment to students doesn’t end at graduation—it evolves into mentorship and ongoing community support. Ryan Witt, our head of school in Tianjin, witnessed this firsthand: “Some alumni had already been considering organizing a gathering like this. When they heard we were coming, they were eager to support us and even volunteered to advocate for future events.”

The spirit of giving back was evident when a group of alumni independently planned a seminar on Korean university admissions and campus life. They invited current students, parents, and school leaders from all LifePlus schools, modeling the very leadership and initiative we encourage in our students. “They exemplified what we teach—taking initiative, contributing to the community, and creating opportunities for others,” Witt said.

A Stronger Future Through Lasting Connections

Our recent visit to South Korea underscored a vital truth: student success extends beyond academics. It thrives on relationships, mentorship, and a global network of support. By fostering strong ties with universities, engaging alumni, and cultivating a culture of lifelong connection, we are preparing students not just for higher education—but for life itself.

As parents, you play a crucial role in this journey. Together, we are building a foundation that ensures every student is equipped for success, both in university and beyond.
