Parent Workshop: Helping Children Manage Stress
Raising emotionally resilient children can be challenging, especially in today’s fast-paced and demanding world. Children often encounter stress from school, extracurricular activities, and social pressures, and learning how to manage these challenges is essential for their well-being.

We are excited to invite you to a special parent workshop on Tuesday, September 16, at 9:00 am. The workshop will be led by our LifePlus Director of Odyssey, Melissa McCutchan. The LifePlus Odyssey team is a group of staff committed to fostering social and emotional growth of LifePlus students by regularly providing invaluable support to our students and staff.

Join us as we explore practical strategies to help children recognize, understand, and manage stress effectively. This session will provide actionable tools for supporting your child’s emotional health, fostering resilience, and creating a balanced and nurturing environment at home. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please register by completing the survey.

Talent Show Auditions
The showcases of talent will take place in the theater in October and November. This year, selected students will be chosen to perform at the final show. While there will be no judged awards, every participant will be honored with a “Finalist” certificate and medal as we celebrate the wide variety of talents in our community!

To participate, students will need to submit an application form and an audition video. Applications will become available next week. Students can start thinking now about the types of talent they may try.

ECC/Elementary:
• Show Date: Friday, October 17.
• Registration: Students must turn in a registration form to Ms. Ma by Monday, September 29 to participate. Forms can be obtained during music class. Audition results will be announced on October 1.

Secondary:
• Show Date: Friday, November 07
• Registration: Students must turn in a registration form to Ms. Forstrom by Friday, October 17 to participate. Forms will be available next week on a table outside the music room (Room 420). Audition results will be announced on October 20.

Viewing Your Child’s Grades on Canvas
Last year, the YHIS Elementary school transitioned to Standards-Based Grading. As a result, your child’s grades are no longer available on PowerSchool and must now be accessed through Canvas.

To view your child’s grades:

  1. Click on Canvas
  2. Click the Parent Log-In button.
  3. Log in using the email you have registered on PowerSchool.
  4. If you haven’t previously logged in, click “Forgot Password” to create a password.
  5. If you have more than one student at YHIS, you can switch between children using the drop-down menu at the top of the page.
  6. Select the subject you would like to view.

ECC and Elementary IXL Policy
IXL is an excellent tool to enhance your student's skills in math and Language arts. Teachers use IXL for students who may need extra practice in a skill or to practice a skill that is currently being taught. A teacher may encourage students to practice at home, but it is not homework and therefore not mandatory that the student work on IXL at home. YHIS leaves it up to parent discretion if you want your student practicing with IXL.

Every teacher will input the newest MAP results into IXL creating a MAP skills plan. In addition, a teacher may choose specific skills a student needs to practice. Once again, any practice at home is up to the parent.

Some best practices for doing IXL at home are:

  • Set a time limit. 10-20 minutes is a nice range instead of reaching 100%.
  • If percentages are preferred, aim for 80%-90%.

Often, a student can become frustrated and discouraged when an answer is given incorrectly on IXL. IXL uses a smartscore system where questions become more difficult the closer to 100%, and student scores drop more the closer a student is to 100%. The suggestions above can alleviate the frustration.

Secondary Fall Camps
The Middle School and High School Fall Camps are scheduled for September 18-19. Both camps will be held at Mohota Town in Penglai, but they will run separately.

A permission form for the Fall Camp has been sent home with your child. Please ensure that the signed form is submitted to their advisory teacher by this week.

For the camps, photocopies of student passport ID pages are required. However, since the admissions office already has these copies on file, there is no need to resubmit them. Additionally, Middle School students are required to submit a photocopy of the passport page showing their most recent entry stamp.
